Introduction

Note: this page only catalogs third-party open-source projects and links to their official repositories; it neither develops, hosts nor distributes any software and assumes no liability. These are independent, open-source works written from the ground up, unaffiliated with and not authorized by any third-party commercial software or its maker; any third-party names, formats or trademarks are referenced for interoperability and description only.

PhotoCraft is a free, open-source professional image editor, written independently in Rust. It brings core raster-editing capabilities to both desktop and browser — no cost, no subscription, and no forced network access.

What it lets you do:

  • Retouch, composite and design posters: layers, masks, adjustment layers (Curves, Hue/Saturation, etc.), layer styles (drop shadow, outer glow, stroke), type, vector shapes and a range of brushes.
  • Read and write layered image documents (PSD): open and keep editing layered PSD files, so you interoperate with existing projects.
  • Familiar panels and shortcuts: the layout and common shortcuts follow mainstream image-editor habits, so the learning cost is near zero.

Product highlights:

  • Native and fast: a GPU compositor on wgpu (Metal / Vulkan / DX12 / WebGPU) with copy-on-write tiles and multithreaded filters. No Electron, no embedded browser, so it stays light on memory and quick to launch.
  • Local, offline, privacy-first: everything runs on your machine; no telemetry, no network unless you ask.
  • Scriptable and agent-ready: every action is a command, reachable from the UI, CLI, a JSON control channel or an MCP server for AI agents.

Team & tech: built by the community ArtCraft team (GitHub user storytold, site getartcraft.com). The whole Craft series is written in 100% pure Rust with an egui interface, and is an independent open-source work unaffiliated with any third-party commercial software.

Platforms: macOS, Windows, Linux, FreeBSD, and a browser (WebAssembly) build. Currently early alpha.
